Keep kids busy during winter holidays and snow days with snowmen, snowball blasters, snowball makers and snow forts.

When kids are out of school for the winter holidays or snow days, it can be hard to find ways to keep them occupied and active. The best snow toys are easy to use and allow kids to use their imaginations to create their own fun. Choose snowman kits, snowball makers, snowball blasters, snow fort tools, inflatable igloos and an inflatable ice rink to keep kids busy outside in winter.

Keep Kids Busy With Snowman Kits

Making snowmen is a classic way to keep kids busy during the winter holidays or on snow days. But snowman kits can keep kids interested and occupied longer. Amazon.com’s Winter Snowman Kit in a Tin sells for $26.99 and includes dress-up items like hats, buttons and plastic pipes. Kids can use these items to dress their own snowmen.

Another option is to create a snowman dress-up box with clothes from home or from thrift stores. Collect clothes the kids have outgrown and mismatched gloves to add to the snowman dress-up box. For a short trip out of the house on cold or rainy days, take kids to the thrift store and let them pick a few items to add to the dress-up box. Look for interesting hats and scarves, boxes of large buttons, artificial carrots and other fun accessories. Save scoops from coffee, formula or drink mixes and spray paint them black to make “pipes” if building traditional snowmen.

Snow Toys for Snowball Fights

Snowball fights are an exciting way to let the kids blow off steam and run around on a cold snow day but there are new toys that add to this traditional fun. Snowball makers look like large tongs with scoops on the end. These tools are perfect to create tons of snowballs for snowball fights. Snowball makers are sold by many different retailers and sell for around $7.99 each.

The SnowBall Blaster and the Arctic Force SnowBall Blaster by Wham-O add a new twist to snowball fights. These snowball-shooting toys have snowball makers on top, and then the snowballs can be launched. The Arctic Force is a smaller model that shoots a single snowball up to 50 feet and is good for younger children. The SnowBall Blaster launches three snowballs as far as 100 feet. Prices start at around $29.99.

Snow Forts and Igloos for Snow Days

When kids are out of school for snow days, turn their time outside into imaginative play time with snow fort building tools and inflatable igloos. Snow fort tools in their most basic form are plastic shells with handles that are filled with snow then flipped over to form bricks of snow for building. More elaborate sets, like L.L. Bean’s Snow Castle Pack includes molds of different sizes and a turret maker. This set sells for $19.95 and a set that also includes two snowball makers sells for $29.95. Kids can use these sets to make smaller castles in the snow or large castles and igloos.

Younger children who are not able to build their own igloos may prefer an inflatable igloo to fuel their imaginations on snow days. Amazon.com has two options for parents who are looking for an outdoor igloo for kids. The Sportstuff Sno Fort Inflatable Igloo sells for about $75 and is made of heavy gauge PVC. Aviva’s Inflatable Snow Bunker Junior Kids Snow Fort sells for about $99. Both of these inflatable igloos are fun for kids to use their imaginations while being slightly protected from the elements.

Outdoor Fun for Winter Holidays

For those who live in colder climates where snow days last more than one or two days, parents may want to try Lillian Vernon’s Kiddie Ice Rink. This inflatable ice-skating rink is filled with water so kids can skate on the frozen surface. It is more than 9 feet in diameter and will occupy kids for hours. The Kiddie Ice Rink sells for about $49.98.

When kids are out of school for snow days or the winter holidays it can be hard to keep them busy and active outdoors. Fortunately there are many options that encourage imaginative and active play. Little children will enjoy dressing up their own snowmen, playing in an inflatable igloo or building castles in the snow. Older kids can have dramatic snowball fights, build their own igloos or go ice skating at home.
