Snow sculptures and snow paintings are a great way to have fun with the whole family this winter.

There’s nothing prettier than a blanket of freshly fallen snow, but once the family has enjoyed the winter scene for five minutes, it’s time to have fun. One way parents and kids can spend a day in the snow is by making snow sculptures and then adding some vibrant color.

Making Snow Sculptures

Aside from the fact that it melts, snow is an incredible medium for sculpting. When snow is just the right consistency, it can be formed into just about any shape imaginable. Families can take a break from the traditional snowman in favor of an enormous stegosaurus, giant tortoise, spouting whale, or adorable teddy bear. Kids might even enjoy designing their own snow village.

Handy tools for snow sculpting include, but are by no means limited to, shovels, trowels, spoons, spatulas, knitting needles, buckets, and tubs.

Families who live along a road that is plowed are guaranteed to find extraordinary uses for the mountains of snow already piled in place for their convenience.

Another technique for snow sculpting involves the use of Rubbermade boxes or tubs. Snow that is packed compactly into the tub and then dumped into place can serve as building blocks for forts, igloos, chairs, tables, or just about anything else kids can think up.

Snow Painting

Once the sculpting is done, everyone can break for hot chocolate and then return for an afternoon session of snow painting to liven up the snow sculptures.

Parents who want to be prepared can start saving empty spray bottles ahead of time before they’re snowed in. Before venturing back outdoors, parents can fill each bottle with water and add a few drops of food coloring to each. Outside, the colorful water adds great character to the snow art.

Snow painting is also a fun addition to any snow fort or igloo. Kids can decorate the inside and outside of their snow home.

Snowmen and Snow Angels

There’s a reason why snowmen and snow angels pop up in almost every yard as soon as the snow falls. They’re easy to make and a timeless tradition. But even time-honored traditions can stand a little jazzing up. A little snow paint will give families the most beautiful set of angels and original snowmen on the block.

There’s no end to the fun families can enjoy in the snow this winter. For more great ideas, parents can check out how to play two new snow games, how to make an impenetrable snow fort, and how to add a curve to the classic snowball.
