St. Patrick's Day Outdoor Activities for KidsFun Things to Do with Leprechauns and Clovers Outside
Make St. Patrick's Day a green day by enjoying some active and exciting outdoor activities with your children.
If the weather is nice on March 17th, why not go outside with the kids and have some St. Paddy’s day fun? Here are some ideas to keep everyone happy and busy in the sunshine. Four-Leaf Clover HuntYou can go on a four-leaf clover hunt with everyone. It can be in your backyard or a nearby park, just find a place where clovers grow. Finding a four-leaf clover does take luck, but it is possible. Sometimes you can even find five-leaf and six-leaf clovers because these abnormal clovers tend to grow in patches. If you don’t find a four-leaf clover, don’t worry. You can easily find the “rare” two-leaf clover with this easy trick. Find a regular three-leaf clover and pick off one of the leaves when your kids are not looking. Then get all excited and tell them about your great find. Younger children may even be excited for you, but older kids will likely call you out on your little joke. During your four-leaf clover hunt, if it is getting close to the time you need to get back inside, you can always change the focus of your search. You can decide to pick out special three-leaf clovers to take home, like the most interesting one, the biggest one, the greenest one, etc. Leprechaun HuntTo get ready for the leprechaun hunt, you need to buy a bag of chocolate gold coins and draw or buy some leprechaun figures. If you have a black pot for the “gold” that would nicely add to the affect too. Hide the leprechauns around the house or in the yard. Then have your children search for the little creatures. Once they have found all the leprechauns, you can reveal the pot of gold and share it with everyone equally. You could also put some gold coins with each of the leprechauns instead. This will make it more competitive to see who can find the most coins. If your kids are having trouble finding the leprechauns you can help them out by saying “you are getting greener” when they are closer and “you are getting close to a pinch” when they are getting further away from them. Play Leprechaun Hide-and-SeekIn this game, the kids (and adults) get to be the leprechauns. If you want, you can give everybody who is hiding a gold coin or two. You can have it so the person searching can keep the gold coins for each person they find and then hand out more for each round of hide-and-seek or you can have the kids share the chocolate together at the end of the game. Green CloverYou can play a special version of the game Red Rover called Green Clover for St. Patrick’s Day. You would call “Green Clover, Green Clover I’d like you to send (the name of the person from the other team) right over.” All the rules of Red Rover would apply where you have two lines of people across from each other, with everyone in each line holding hands. The person called over has to run through the linked hands of two people and try to make them let go of each other. If he can’t do it, he is now part of the “enemy” team. If he is able to make the pair let go of their hands, then both those people have to join his team. With spring on the way, it’s nice to make St. Patrick’s Day a fun outdoor day by doing activities like four-leaf clover hunting, searching for leprechauns and playing Green Clover.
